Welcome to our new website! Being brand new it is a work in progress! We have many diligent and heartfelt volunteers who are just busting their  "you know what", to share their life experiences with us! At our first meeting I was simply blown away by all that our volunteers had to say! Some go back a long ways and bring a lot of salt to the table! Others, such as myself, just sit and listen in amazement at the meaningful stories of people living from one day to the next!
Come visit with us once in awhile and enjoy the progress of our society, we have much planned, just one of which is a walking tour of some of our more endearing older homes, all in good time though, so, best to you and live strong!

                                                                  CATHEDRAL CITY FOUNDERS!!

In the year 1925 Glen Plumly contacted his friends, George Allen and Jack Grove, who had a real estate office on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Plumly`s idea was for them to purchase the east one-half of section 33, township 4 south, range 5 east from the Southern Pacific Land Company and subdivide it into small lots. Allen and Grove had a good friend, Mr. M. V. Van Fleet who joined the three in the purchase.
The four gentleman subdivided the one-half section, drilled a successful well and added a storage tank with a delivery line.
Ultimately the subdivision was named after the canyon south of the proposed town. The four main streets were named after the four sub dividers Plumly, Allen, Grove, and Van Fleet with the exception of highway 111 which was named Broadway.
Thus, Cathedral City was named!
On  Jan. 1st 1927, Cathedral City was placed on the market for sale with an invitation for a free barbecue and free bus transportation from Palm Springs to entice bidders for the subdivision parcels.
George Allen was asked why they added the word "City" to the name, he replied that he did not know, but felt it to be very optimistic!

Agnes Pelton History

Picture
At the January 22, 2012 meeting of the Cathedral City Historical Society
Dr. Nancy Sheley (second from the right) spoke about Agnes Pelton's life
in Cathedral City and prior to Cathedral City.  Nancy did her dissertation on Agnes and she had a wealth of information and many slides of her landscapes, portraits, and spiritual paintings.
The two gentlemen on the left, Simeon Den and Peter Palladino have recently purchased Agnes Pelton's house and contacted Nancy to speak about her life.  Pelton's house will be on the 2012 Historic Walking Tour sponsored by the Cathedral City Historical Society (Feb. 12th) and Nancy is creating a one woman play about Agnes Pelton.  On the right is Robert Gomer, President of the Cathedral City Historical Society.
